How would you describe your style? Who or what inspires you?
Our style is simple and elegant. Never too fashionable. Forever classics inspire us plus everything discernible actually.
Where do you girls go shopping or where did you find these beautiful pieces? We shop on marketplaces on and offline all over the world.
‘Inspiration is everywhere, everywhere is fashion’ – Joan & Evan
When did fashion first enter your life? Did fashion also bring you girls to Amsterdam?
Evan: When the Otto magazine got delivered. We grew up on a little farm wearing dungarees with clogs because we played outside all day long. Our father introduced us to the magazine and let us pick out a dress. We always chose the ones with the most colours, flowers and ruffles.
Joan: Also our mother designed and made almost all of our clothing herself. She took us to fabric markets and shops so we could choose our favourites. She always made sure we wouldn’t choose the same so we would look different. In the end we always went for the same print or structure, but in a different colour.
Our career / life switch from our Café to our Bureau de Mode made us move from The Hague to Amsterdam.
What does an ordinary working day look like for you girls?
It starts with a bike ride to the gallery, where we meet our partner Tami. Kern & Dijkstra Bureau de Mode is our shared business. We work together at Tami’s shop located on the Prinsengracht. We start with coffee, chatting, e-mails, checking all vintage websites and working on our corporate styling business program, events or presentations. For lunch we always prepare something yummy and pretty of which we enjoy every bite. After that it’s usually time for some online and offline shopping for our personal shopping service, photoshoots or fashion concierge service. Sometimes we end the day with music and some dancing…
How did you come up with the idea of setting up your business together?
During an interview for Vogue we were talking about our dream of starting a fashion styling team after selling our café. It appeared in the article and from that moment on everyone was aware of our dream. We became close friends with the lady who interviewed us, as we shared the same love for designer items and so much more. We noticed a great amount of people struggling with their personal style on a private and professional level. We started talking about a solution and setting up the business together in Amsterdam and that is what happened one year after the interview.
Who is responsible for what?
We are still in the start up phase of our business. Every day we learn something new about each others qualities. A lot of communication is involved and so we divide our tasks and responsibilities.
And how is it, working together as sisters?
Our relationship as sisters is unconditionally, which is the strongest base for a business. We both couldn’t wish for a better working partner besides Tami.
In what sense are you sustainable when it comes to buying clothes?
Buying and selling secondhand items!
All the pieces for sale in our TNC Closet were bought with love care. And now we we would love to sell them to a new lover. And we need to sell old loves to buy new loves.
The sky is the limit – what are you girls dreaming of?
Helping as many people possible to feel confident about their personal style. This would translate into Kern & Dijkstra being famous and loved worldwide. Plus speaking French and having more knowledge. And a husband, family and everyday love & happiness.
